Precisely!  Especially when the feedpoint impedance looking back into 
the transmitter was on the order of 5 ohms and a conjugate inductive 
reflection of ~ 100pF antenna capacitance.  The design criteria was 
based on open wire through a fuselage insulator and the highly 
capacitive antenna began at the hull interface.  Total feeder length was 
typically 3-4 feet.  The "theoretically" right way to match it is a 
*short* open wire to a matching network (with a wide copper ground strap 
return to the chassis), then coax from the matching network, but hams 
have tried a lotta things over the years that were not theoretical 
ideals.... :-)
