I'm going to answer as many as possible in one shot so here goes ...
Starting with the BC-312: It will be on site in not that long a time
and I have two directions I can go with it, historically accurate (as
much as I can aboard a [many bad words] Wrangler, or post war ham mix
and match. Historically accurate would be preferred since this is
also "show and tell" equipment.
If the BC-191 and BC-223* are more available than I thought then this
is a good thing. I'll need to replace the alternator with a heavy
duty one to handle the added load (especially in the case of the
BC-191) but this shouldn't be a major issue.
Robert, having a full blown TCS system would be delightful. Such a
vehicle-mounted system with a 12vdc power supply was probably used at
Ford Island if nowhere else. On the other hand, I would imagine the
Army and/or the AAF had an SCR-193 and/or SCR-245 or two running
around as well, and I'll have the BC-312.
Carl, the transmitters you mentioned would all work for postwar
ham-bashed together rigs, and they are an alternate possibility -
especially since I have already unvirginated command transmitters I
can use. As to power supplies, it's pretty much a case of whatever I
can get. For the historically accurate versions, I want to use the
dynamotors/vibrapacks as originally intended. For ham-bashed rigs ...
whatever works.
Regarding the SX-24: Carl, Mac & Meir, I like those lists of
transmitters plus the idea of going homebrew since I did that a lot.
Since I have a digital copy of the 1936 ARRL Handbook, I should be in
good shape there ... except for the fact that a lot of my really old
radios were built up on 1x12 pine boards using tube sockets et al that
attached to the boards using screws. I doubt that will work here.
Meir, this is a fun kind of homework where a passing grade is a
functioning rig. :-)
I don't know if I've mentioned this or not but hamfests here aren't
quite as abundant or as target rich as they are on the mainland.
Actually, they're pretty anemic by comparison. But then, the total
population for the state is about the same as the city of Pittsburgh
which is where I moved from. (We also have interstates that can't get
from one county to the next but that's a whole 'nother subject.) As a
result, I have to depend on the denizens of these lists and *that*
place to find equipment, and the latter only has stuff come up when
I'm between checks so have to let it pass.
if anyone wants to thin the herd a bit, keeping in mind a VA pension
leaves little in the way of discretionary funds, I can be made
interested.
Best regards,
Michael, Tauson
