After reading Meir's challenge and Mac's reminder that homebrew was a
lot more common then, I dug out four digital manuals I have, the 1936
and 1941 ARRL Handbooks and the 1937 and 1938 RCA transmitting tube
manuals.
The first mentioned gave me one really good piece of news; my
experience literally breadboarding equipment using 1930s designs can
be used. Between it and the 1941 Handbook, I found several nice
crystal controlled rigs good for around 25 watts out on 80 and 40m CW.
Since I have never successfully built a stable VFO, I'm not too
concerned about being rock-bound. I just need a lot of rocks like I
had during my Novice days.
I know where I can get some appropriate period phones (which reminds
me, what would have been THE most favored then, Brandes? Baldwin?
Trimm?) Does anyone know of a good source of an equally old key or
crystal holders? (Also, what type of crystal holder would be
appropriate?)
Oh, in place of a large piece of black phenolic for the panel, I'm
thinking more along the lines of black Plexiglas due to relative cost.
My local plastics house has the most wonderful scrap bin which has
supplied several previous projects. I'm sure they won't let me down
now.
Commercially made equipment ... well, I haven't looked yet but I
suspect something will turn up.
Best regards,
Michael, WH7HG
