[ARC5] Radar

John,

I received the below from a friend that monitors the arc5 list. He knew I
did the WWII radar
restoration aboard the submarine USS COBIA. As far as we know the boats SJ-1
surface
search unit, that is now in full operation just as it was during the 7 war
patrols that the boat
went on, is the worlds oldest operating radar. There are units that have
older parts but none
(as far as I know) are in full operation. It was a real delight doing the
work. It took about
6 months of restoration according the museum rules, which mean that the unit
can't have
any of its design changed...I could use newer parts like caps, resistors,
etc. I agree with
one the of the below comments: after you really get into the design of some
of the radar
circuits you find that the guys that did the original work were
really,really,really smart.

If you know of any SJ parts let me know: we are always looking for spares.
See
http://usscobia.com for operating pictures as well as a needed tube list.

Regards,

I've long (>45 years> been interested in radars and have a very modest
collection. I've tried to collect complete systems, BTW.

But most is lost or soon will be lost, which is very sad. If you are
interested in preserving some of the things, please drop me a note, off
line.
