I'd be very, very careful of articles written in the 1950s and 1960s.
There was quite a bit of misinformation, like the TVI stuff from military
(ARC-5, WS19) sets. Much of this was because the antenna terminals were
just hooked up to a conventional ham antenna, with the users not
understanding that the sets were designed to resonate an electrically
short antenna. Common mode chokes were not understood, either.
If one were less than charitable, one might suspect this was fostered by
the makers of new ham gear.
Also, some of the "conversions" were pointless and actually reduced the
performance of the sets.
You'd be better off, IMO, to look at the original tech manuals which are
now available and recent scolarship on the sets.
