I've used a not very different, but IMO safer, method. Instead of the AC line, I use a
big DC supply that puts out about 48 VDC @ 5 A in series with a ( couple of 200 W 115
V light bulbs in parallel.) The light bulbs limit the curreent. When it's hooked up, I
whack the vibrator with my hand from different sides to move the reeds until it
starts.
