Well, I've mostly quit getting into these "discussions" as they usually
produce more heat than light. But it is a fact that the majority of the post-war
and 50's comments in the Amateur press condemning various military sets as TVI
generators is a myth born of QST commercial advertiser's trying to sell their
new stuff plus abject incompetence and a propensity to try to get twice as
much power out of the sets as they were ever designed to produce. Even the much
maligned BC-640 when properly tuned produces no TVI. I operated two of them
rock stock in the 60's on 2 meters in a channel 8/11 fringe area with no
complaints from the neighbors. And I've operated several BC-610's using the MO
with no chirp reports, too. Another myth.

The unmodified aircraft sets are total non-starters as TVI generators.
Additional bypassing was NOT required. I don't care what you ever read in the
amateur press. It was all disinformation. The sets worked just fine when
connected and operated as designed. Just like most anything else ever built.

In fact, I'd like to nominate Editors and Engineers for the 2006 Darwin Award
(posthumous of course).
