I'll add one more anecdotal report, although from the Pacific, not Europe.  
My Father-in-Law flew B-24's (and other airplanes in other wars) with the 372nd 
Heavy Bombardment Squadron (307th Bomb Gp., 13th Air Force) from Guadalcanal 
through the final move to Morotai (all in 1944).  He says he remembers turning 
in Command transmitters and checking out others when they checked into a new 
area.  Doesn't recall (I showed him one) during that period ever seeing a 
BC-602 Control Box.  Thinks that the first time he recalls seeing one was in 
P/F-51's that he flew in the Reserves between the end of WW-II and the beginning of 
the Korean War.
