I remember one reason hams in the 50s used the ARC 5 type
transmitters which they could pick up for $10 at the local ham
surplus shack on Beverly Blvd. (man what a place that was!!!!), they
could build a simple modulator and be on AM, very economically. What
was that modulator circuit? Must have been in the old handbooks.
Anyone here built a good home-brew modulator for an "ARC-5" xmtr?
Guess I will see these things when I get some of the old books and
manuals I have been trying to track down. I am getting ahead of
myself since I do not even have one of these units up and running
even on CW, but I was curious about this.
Anyone having fun building a modulator from scratch? What approach
would one use these days? Recycling old tube gear and parts from the
junkbox? Or is there something else. How common are the original
military modulators for these?
