[Antennas] Want HF No Radials Vertical

The K7LXC/N0AX report on several multiband verticals (available from
<http://www.championradio.com>) gave good marks to the Cushcraft R8,
which uses a counterpoise, but no radials (they did have a radial
installation, since they were comparing a number of verticals as well
as a 1/4-wave reference antenna). I have a Hy-Gain AV-640, which is
similar (but without traps) at 15' and it performs better than I had
expected, including numerous EU, AF, AS, SA and OC contacts on 40-10m
at 100W or less in the past year (no radials, but I have fairly good
soil with salt water 400 ft. away). I'm sure a LP or yagi stack will
do much better, but one can use a compromise antenna and still enjoy
the hobby.
