%&%#%^... there is nothing worse than a &$#%$&%$ poor quality connector. A
manufacturer might want to save 25 cents per connector X 2 per radio X tens
of thousands of radios, but for us mere mortals the lifetime cost to use
high quality connectors is a pittance more...
Replace all the cheap &#%#&% connectors. Amphenol, Cable-X-Perts, and
others make and/or sell high quality connectors. Usually not more than an
extra 50 cents per connector for the 'good stuff'. Quality connectors
usually are more corrosion resistant and easier to assemble and install &
remove.....
I became so enamored with the 'anti-seize' thread lubes used for marine and
automobile bolts that I've started to put a very tiny drop on every screw-on
a cable connector (external threads only) I redo. It can be a bit messy
unless you're very careful, but actually improves the thread's electrical
contact, prevents corrosion, and is SOOOO nice when you have to take it
apart. The stuff comes in 1oz tubes and 6 oz bottles from auto parts
stores. A 6 oz bottle (has a small brush mounted in the cap) is a lifetime
supply.
--------
Another potential 'source' of stripped/cross-threaded 239 connectors is
their placement and the installation layout.
Connectors that are hard to reach and/or installations that are difficult to
get behind, where the user reconfigs the cables by reaching around back
while remaining in front of the equipment, are prone to connector damage.
It's takes a bit longer, but it's really worth it move the equipment so
you're able to see what you're doing.
