If you have sandy soil with small sized pebbles, you might be able to use
the method I have used.

The soil here is sand with mica. Hard over a long period of time, terrible
if you dig up more than required. So I have a 5 ft long Cu tube with hose
connections soldered on each end. Various tips to go on the exit end, a
pistol type nozzlse goes on the inlet end. With the long straight tip on
the exit outlet end, I stand on a chair hold the tube perpendicular to the
gound and wash out a hole. The hole can grow to about 2' in diameter very
easily by just moving the tube down fast. Works great for me. Then drop
in the rod, back-fil with what material you want adding water to pack.

The tube with other tips on can be used to wash the car, even under for the
salt here-abouts, spray windows etc.
