FW: [Antennas] Lack of Customer Service Support - Cushcraft

In defence of Cushcraft, I must say that they were very helpful in shipping
me a replacement part when the 17/20m trap on my R8 failed.
In October 2000, the trap arced over, and the arc burned a carbonised track
into the insulator at the bottom of the trap. Apparently, the tip of the
screw which secures the end of the trap coil to the outer shell was too
close to the inner tubing. I took a number of photographs of the damaged
area, and e-mailed them to my contact at the company. This evidence may well
have led to a design change.
In any event, I received the new trap within a reasonable time, and
re-installed the antenna at my new QTH. The R8 has been working flawlessly
at the 1 kW power level ever since.
I have used two other Cushcraft verticals - an R5, and their excellent, but
sadly discontinued, AV-80 75/80m monobander - without a lick of trouble. I
was getting 59 to 59+10 reports from Europe on 80m SSB with 1 kW to the
AV-80.

Subject: [Antennas] Lack of Customer Service Support - Cushcraft
I had a similar experience with the Cushcraft Customer Service Department in
year 2001. After two telephone calls and two letters to the Customer
Service Department trying to obtain the correct replacement parts for the
D-40 rotatable dipole antenna, I sent a letter to the President of
Cushcraft. I received the correct parts within 7 days of posting my letter.
Too bad Bill Cushman is deceased. I am sure he would not tolerate the
incompetence of the current Cushcraft Customer Service Staff.
Regards,
Bill Mills
