I've had great luck with just getting a blob of solder on the iron or gun tip, with the enameled wire in it, move it back and forth over the area you want clean, keeping a sufficient amount of solder flowing so that the wire in inside the blob, and the molten solder will burn the enamel off and leave it tinned at the same time.
