It should be handled and used with extreme care.  Zinc chloride is a skin irritant. Avoid contact of the eyes.  If ingested, the lethal dose in humans is said to be 3–5 g.  Zinc chloride is extremely detrimental to the lungs, and pulmonary exposure to zinc chloride smoke has reportedly resulted in fatalities.
