It is dependent on the E-Mail client used, and what the settings are.

I use Thunderbird.  I control where my address book is, and don't get 
issues where I can't see things, or having some bot go scrape my address 
list or hijack my account.

What you are experiencing is different than what a lot of us deal with.

It is really a mixed bag.
