"Elmer" as a term meaning "amateur radio mentor" pre-dates that How's
DX column by decades. My father was my elmer in the late 1950's and
we used that term even then... as part of Dad elmering me, he told me
about the old-time traditions and that the term "elmer" dates back at
least to the early 40's if not before. (He had a real Wouff Hong
from sometime in the 1930's... sure wish I could figure out whatever
happened to that...)
