Same here, Eddy. My first contacts as a Johnny Novice were with a rig I
had adapted from a carcass of a piece of homebrew lab gear I had rescued
from the University of Illinois Roger Adams Laboratory my senior year
there. It was an RF amplifier probably used for some sort of spectroscopy,
using a 6AU6 feeding a 6146, and I used it on 80M and 40M CW with a $5
Knight VFO I bought at my 2nd Deerfield hamfest (Hosstraders way back
then). This transmitter has evolved into a screen-modulated 6CD6 rig
covering 160M - 10M, which I still use regularly either "barefoot" or into
3-1000Z linear amp I made from a scrapped-out RF plasma generator from
work.
My first receiver was an S-20R. It had the advantage of being able to hear
the entire Novice band all at once without having to touch the tuning ;-).
After about 3 QSOs a friend felt sorry for me and lent me his Drake R4C
with 250Hz and 500Hz filters installed.
I have had many "Elmers" throughout the years though, and have learned a
lot from people on lists such as these as well as on the air and from
various articles and books. I am grateful to all of them, and am still
learning.
