Bob:
I just finished referbing a Ranger I. I am using a D-104 without any
pre-amplification... Works just great and my audio control is set at 6.5
with some room to spare should I need it. I don't know how your microphone
is wired, but the "hot" audio must go to pin 1 of the 2 pin mic connector,
the mic audio shield can go to ground.
If you have the mic hooked up properly and still have no audio, I would
first check the audio stages for tube operation. Tube check the 12AX7 first
audio amp and the 12AU7 audio driver. Also check the modulator tubes, may be
1614's or I use 6L6's. Perhaps the real first thing to check is the jumper
plug in the rear of the Ranger. You must have the plug in with the proper
jumpers or the modulator will never reach the finals.
Assuming that all of the above check out, I would measure the bias on the
center tap of the audio interstage transformer. This is the transformer that
provides push pull audio to the modulator tube grids. The bias should be
about -28 volts. If this bias has changes, and it does with age of the
resistors, you may be cutting off the modulator tubes. Some things you
should change are the 10 ufd electrolytic cathode capacitors on the first
audio amplifier pin 3 and pin 8 to ground Also be sure to change the 15 ufd
cathode capacitor on the audio driver tube, 12AU7. Now the 3 cathode
capacitors just mentioned are a unit.. All three in one case. Use individual
capacitors in all cases. This should be enough to get you started. Let me
know how you make out.

Subject: [AMRadio] Ranger w/D104 Mic
Hi all,
I have been trying to get my Ranger on the air for quite some time to get on
the AM mode.
I cant seem to get my D 104 microphone to work. I am trying to keep it
simple and just
use the 2 wires for the 2 pin plug on the back of the radio. I have a green
wire which I have
to ground and the yellow wire which I am assuming is the hot side of the
mic. I put the radio
into "phone" and talk into the mic but meters dont move, it doesnt appear to
be putting out
audio. I adjust the "audio" control and that doesnt seem to be doing
anything either.
Am I missing something here? Do I need to hook the amplifier circuit back up
in the mic in
order for it to drive the rig?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
CW seems to be
fine.
Thanks-Bob-W0YBS
