[AMRadio] "Real" AM'er

Hi Jack, :)

Long time no see. Yep, now that I got the preselector re-synchronized
(concerning transmit vs receive [I should have left it alone, rather
than "tweaking" it]), I'm back on 10m AM with my Yaesu FT-301SD, with
its great sounding collector modulation (the solid state equivalent of
plate modulation). I've also dabbled once in a blue moon, when I'm in a
rush, with my Kenwood TS-2000X (when I don't feel like hooking things up
to the Yaesu). I'd use the Viking II on 10m, but the Yaesu does 30
watts of carrier (which is plenty most of the time on 10m), and is much
more frequency agile. I like high band AM. I wish more people would do it.

Yep, you don't need much, when 10 is open. Kudos for working Rome with
your 3 watts of carrier. 10 will surprise you doing QRP. I operated
semi-casually in the CQ CW WWDX contest this weekend, and my biggest
thrill was working Namibia (V51YL), working a few JAs, and tons of
Europeans, with no more than 4.5 watts of CW power. It just takes a
little patience. I'm not a purist about QRP. If condx. aren't there,
and I want to make the QSO, I will turn up the power.

And yes, one of the reasons I post so seldom on the AM list, is it gets
nasty so often.

73,
Ellen - AF9J

P.S. - sorry I was a grouch
