Thanks, Geoff. That sounds like a very good idea and I will have the new
hardware ready when I varnish the transformer. Hopefully, implementing these
two great ideas will finally solve the talk-back problem.

Something else, Rick - replace those old screws and nuts with bolts and 
nuts.
The mil-spec way of securing fasteners is (from the surface out) flat 
washer, lock-washer nut (or bolt, depending)

Sometimes those old screws get rusty with age, and lose their tinsel 
strength.  Replace the old hardware with stainless steel new hardware, 
and use bolts instead of screws so you can put some /torque/ on 'em!  
Possibly a slim metal plate to go between bolt holes for added extra 
strength to get the laminations tighter.

Just another idea.

Story goes that Gene White/WA5ATH (sk) had a 'talking' modulation 
transformer.  It was suggested he operate the thing while it was 
submersed in transformer oil.  Ol' Gene thought that was a good idea, 
and got an ice chest and poured oil in it.  That cured the talk-back, 
but Gene, being the frugal guy he was, use a styrofoam ice-chest and 30W 
motor oil.  About once a week, he'd have to 'check the dipstick' on his 
modulation transformer.  ;-)

It was a different time, back then.  There weren't the 'purists' then, 
like there are now.
