What about running a separate filament transformer? One could remove the string(s) from the original transformer and carefully run a cable out the back to another filament transformer sitting somewhere behind the transmitter. That should lessen the load and heat. Might not be beautiful, but would keep her running.

And yes, change the caps.

This is the weak point of the Champion series for sure. One thing you
should do, no matter what, is check that 3 section electrolytic
capacitor in the audio section of the transmitter. That thing along
with those in the bias string are critical. If they leak they add to
the load on the transformer and that can cause all sorts or grief (Mikey
knows).

I suggest you simply change them before you do anything else. If they
are original, they are most likely dry. In the 3 Champs I have had, I
used a Dremel Tool to cut the case and stuffed modern caps in the case.
Should they work now, they probably will dry out in a short period of
time anyway. Replace them for safety's sake.
