This is the weak point of the Champion series for sure.  One thing you 
should do, no matter what, is check that 3 section electrolytic 
capacitor in the audio section of the transmitter.  That thing along 
with those in the bias string are critical.  If they leak they add to 
the load on the transformer and that can cause all sorts or grief (Mikey 
knows).

I suggest you simply change them before you do anything else.  If they 
are original, they are most likely dry.  In the 3 Champs I have had, I 
used a Dremel Tool to cut the case and stuffed modern caps in the case. 
Should they work now, they probably will dry out in a short period of 
time anyway.  Replace them for safety's sake.
