Sounds like an easy project to get those beauties on the air again.. like to hear how that Champion sounds.

Well, I have finally had some time to check out the Globe Champ 350
that I got from my Dad (W5JHJ - SK). I used a variac and brought up
the voltage slowly during the morning to be nice to the
electrolytics. I finally had it up to 120 VAC and decided to try a
tune-up. Everything seems to work! Switches are dirty, but a bit of
contact cleaner carefully applied should help that.

I had to do the tune up all by memory. At one time, I know that my
Dad had the original manual for it, along with the original sales
slip. In that manual, he had noted what mods he had made.
Unfortunately that has somehow disappeared, so I'll need to get
another copy of the manual.

I'm now doing the same with his Hammarlund HQ-170 receiver, to get it
back up to snuff. I'll need to get a manual for that, too, as all of
his manuals were missing. I don't have the rigs in my shack, yet. I
also need to set up a 4 position coax switch "backwards" so that I
can use all my rigs with the same antennas without playing with coax
connectors.

I have a very small bit of work to do with the Champ: Dad had mounted
a small Dayton blower on the side to help control heat. It was
plugged into a switched 120 VAC outlet on the back of the rig. That
socket was broken during the move, so I need to fix that. I may need
nothing more than some epoxy, but I'll have to look carefully.

I'd like to set it up with the HQ-170, but may need to rearrange some
equipment to fit it all in. I really wish I had all of Dad's
documentation, but I at least have the rig. I hope that in the near
future, I can play a bit of AM with the rest of you!

Kim Elmore, N5OP
