Problem is to guage the (hidden) level of highest bid. Once you know this
amount, and often your first bid is in there already, you can jump in and
outbid yourself by a comfortable margin. If you are currently 'high bid'
your perfect knowledge will allow for setting a comfortable margin that
only a gung-ho banshee is going to surpass. Recently someone came in with
a perfect match (!) but of course lost as my bid was first.
In the case of a nibbler who figures out your high bid during the last 10
minutes, you can protect yourself by a last-second up-bid of ~10%. This
has won it for me several critical times. If I had originally bid 10%
higher it would have failed for sure.
And, yes, eBay bidders are lazy. Pick-em-ups are routinely ignored.
