I think it's referred to as 'sniping', Bill. No idea if epay has come up with
a shinier term or not. I've used that site for a few years now, and it seems
to me that unless you're planning to be away and can't bid, placing an early
bid does nothing but pump up the final bid price. The one or two times I had
to use this approach, I lost. I suppose if you want it badly enough and don't
mind bidding a million dollars up front, then no one will beat you anyhow,
just cost you more money.

I'm not sure what increasing your own bid accomplishes unless you have a
change of heart and are willing to pay more. Best to give the item some
thought and place your bid in the last few seconds. You'll either win or lose,
but at least you won't spend days nudging the price up higher. Generally
speaking, the seller has already made it clear by selling there that they
don't want to sell the item to you for X number of dollars, they want the
highest amount someone is willing to pay. They pit sellers and their egos
against each other to their benefit, which brings the $3K SX-88s and $5K
SX-115s and the like. Sniping tends to alleviate some of the 'feeding frenzy'
in the days before.

I've seen some very nice boradcast transmitters listed on there. One Gates
1-Kw rig went very cheap, too. I guess some of the larger stuff often does
when it requires pick up.
