[AK-VHF] 23cm and 33cm

No 900 repeaters (known). Problem is input frequency. Most FM users
are running 927.50 FM simplex. Repeater would be near that (say
927.65). Most of these radios are programmed for 25 MHz duplex split
which put 927.65 repeater input at 902.65 right smack in the
weak-signal subband where KL6M is trying to operate eme. Repeater
users would interfere with him.

1.2 GHz repeater would be somewhere in 1294 MHz suband which
hopefully would not spatter up into 1296.000-1296.100 eme band where
there are at least two of us operating with extremely sensitive
receivers. I do not have a 1294FM radio so would not use such a repeater.

432 and above are affected by tree foliage so one needs about 50-foot
at min height for antennas. MY 2m-eme, 432, 927.50 and 1296 yagis
are clustered at 52 foot which looks over the top of my trees. 222
is at 60-foot and 6m is at 33-foot. My eme dish is 18-foot at top
edge so typically has to elevate to above ten degrees to see clear
sky (thus only usable for eme). I've tried a 1296 shot using the
dish with KL6M with no signals heard (too much ground clutter and trees).

A vertical fed with RG-213 on these bands makes a good dummy load as
not much RF will get radiated (Loss= 9.3 dB per 100-foot). You need
gain (preferably directional) up in the clear. Alternative is to run
portable (mobile) from a high place (like Mt. Baldy parking lot at
2200-foot or 1100-foot from Diamond Ridge above Homer).

Although this was on 2m-SSB, I worked KL7FZ with 35w into 3-element
yagi over 212 mile path (from top of 3300 foot Mt.Bede to Meadow Lake
area (Big Lake). I was fortunate to be employed to do work on a
repeater at the site and company paid the $1150/hour helicopter ride
(30 miles south of Homer).

Most mw weak-signal operation work from high places in portable. My
only 10-GHz shot in AK was across Turnagain Arm from Hope to KL7FZ at
Beluga Pt. (about 5-miles I was only transmitting 10mw). I'm certain
that 10-GHz will work from Diamond Ridge to Mt. Baldy parking lot
(about 150 miles).

Keep thinking!
