Tom,

I have a MOT Spectra on 927.50 FM (about 20w) which drives a MOT amp
to 50-55w with 5w drive. Antenna is 33 loop-yagi vertical pol with
18 dBi at 51 feet. I use a WA2ODO preamp in the electronics box at tower top.

Also run a DEMI 1296-28 MHz 20w transverter driving a 50w linear with
4-5w (located at tower top with WA2ODO preamp) and use a 45 loop yagi
vertical pol with 20 dBi gain. 1296.100 SSB or FM (transverter does
not cover 1294.50).

So far not able to make contact on either band with anyone in
Anchorage though KL4E has copied my 1296 signal one-way.

My knowledge of who is equipped for these bans is incomplete: KL7XJ
has 30 or 50w on 927.50 with 18 loop-yagi near 50-foot. KL4E has
both bands. KL6M probably but not 100% sure of status. Supposedly
several Anchorage stations with converted commercial radios (5-30w)
in Anchorage area with unknown antennas. Many years ago I used a 18
loop yagi with 15w radio portable from a 400-foot hill to contact
KL7YK with mobile at Table Mountain parking lot (81 miles).

The secret for working longer distance on these two bands is getting
the antenna high enough to clear trees and using a preamp mounted at
or near the antenna. Cable losses at these frequencies will "eat
your lunch". I run RF from 20w shack radios on both bands thru
120-foot of 1-5/8 hardline followed by 47-foot of LMR-600 to get
approx 4-5w drive to the tower-located amps. If I had the 50w amps
in the shack I would only get 12-15w to the antenna. Same 5-6 dB
loss would reduce receiver NF to something like 8 dB = deaf!

Operating mw band is not anywhere near like doing 6m or 2m.

I would like to see a list of stations with gear on these bands which
lists RF power, Antenna gain, any preamps in use.
