Moritz lived in west LR, high on the hill, overlooking the river …great location. Amazingly, we was in the commercial HVAC business AS A DESIGNER AND ENGINEER!!!

That was probably either Dickie or Moritz Shollmeier, WA5EFL. Moritz was also a prominent DX chaser in LR. He was known for climbing his tower in the dark so his neighbors wouldn’t be upset. Sadly, he died way too soon, in the 60’s or 70’s.
Moritz was a speaker at one of the first few ADXA meetings in LR. He was another who had a very successful professional career in spite of blindness. I don’t remember what it was, though - possibly insurance.

Back around 1964 or so I was visiting some hams in LR and being toured around to meet a few guys, and one of them was a blind ham working DX. So it must have been him. He may have been using an HT-37 but I'm not sure. But he was working England on SSB and I was highly impressed.
Everything interlocks and comes back.

In recent “chatter” on the reflector Dick Freeling, W5TIZ, was mentioned. Dickie was one of the original charter members of ADXA back in 1967. This morning Chaz Cone, W4GKF, was the “Featured Member” on QRZ.com. I don’t really know him but sometimes I click on the photo to see the person’s bio. I was surprised this morning to see he has Dickie featured on his page as the person who helped him get a license.
For those of you who never knew or met Dick, you can see a photo of him in his shack on Chaz’s page at https://www.qrz.com/db/W4GKF
Also, for those who do not know Dickie was blind. He was shot in the head by a sniper in WW2. He survived, but lost his eyesight.
