Dear Bill:---

Thanx. Oh yes, I definitely prefer to say with a BNC connector.

Hi Tim,
"J" pole antennas work very good on 440MHz ....... Living in town and with 5
Watts should "hit" all the local repeaters.
There are several good older rigs that really is all most Ops need ..... I
have three 70CM "Handies" ... The late seventies FT709.... the late eighties
FT-73 ... and the late ninties FT-40R My suggestions are, If a person's
fingers are small and agile .(and can remember all the "bells& whistles")..
go for one of the newer rigs like the FT-40. .... remember that the older
the rig... the larger and bulky they are.... How ever, the FT-73 is a nice
hand size........... ICOM & Kenwood also have comparable rigs BUT .... be
sure that what ever You purchase... the rig has CTCSS installed ....... Many
many rigs are sold new with this "tone" board as an option and these many
many rigs are originally purchased without the tone board option. This
option a person needs to access most of the modern repeaters.
Another suggestion.... look for a rig with a BNC connector for the antenna
... the newer rigs with the SMA connectors always need an adaptor to hook up
an external antenna (J pole)...
Do a "google" search for the different rigs and read the "specs" in
advance......
Good Luck

I am a recent licensee (06 November 2001) who got his first rig, a 6 watt 2m
HT, on New Years eve. My home QTH is Oakland, California and it has been
suggested I obtain a 70cm rig. I prefer, due to my limited income and other
concerns I perfer a single band HT. I would prefer a rig with a Tx power
switch. I understand than I can QRP on 70cm and that a J-Pole will work as
a good home QTH antenna. Thanx in advance for the input. 73 DE TIM KG6IRH.
