You might keep the following in mind:

(1) Make sure that there is some 440 activity in your area. I live near
Detroit, and there's just about nothing except private repeaters. Shouldn't
be a problem in Oakland, they tell me.

(2) Make sure you have enough power. HT's at best are minimal even
in town.

(3) You need a good antenna. A j-Pole, whatever people tell you,
is simply a quarter wave. Little bitty thing up there. But if it's outside,
and fed with good line, it will work.

Heck, I've got about 4 440 ht's. I could give you one, but I'm sure you'll
find one out there.

Good luck. Hope there's more activity in your area. If I were you, I'd spend
the money on a more powerful 2 mtr mobile! (about $100)

Dear jerry:---

Thanx. The SF Bay Area has many open repeaters and Im told there is much activity thereon. I will have to scan to be sure but I tend to believe what folks on 2 m are telling me. I am most likely going with j poles, one for 2m and another for 70cm, for my home QTH. What kind of feed line should I use for 2m and 70cm, if you dont mind me asking? a 2 m mobile or amplifier will be the next gear i buy after a 70cm HT.
