Bart, a dipole on the ground goes straight up. It is great for local
work. I used to live in a valley north of San Francisco that was isolated
on 2 meters from us to our county courthouse, so we put up a 40 meter
dipole at about clothesline height which bounced the signal in the daytime
right over the mountain to the courthouse. We learned that from experience
in Irag and Iran where dipoles in and on the sand were found to radiate
straight up.
