Thanks for the info Carl....I know the Essex class was the class built
during WWII (cant remember which class came next)...but was unaware she was
still in operation as late as the 60s......a grand lady!

The Essex was fully operational in the early 60's, and based in Quonset 
Point, RI. I steamed with her aboard another ship many times and have 
pictures I took of her flight deck about a third under water during a 
rather nasty November 1962 North Atlantic storm. I was on a fully loaded 
tanker of 32' draught and we just went straight thru the waves rather 
than up and over! The tin cans got the worst of it, they rode like 
corks.

I believe she was the last wooden deck carrier in active service and was 
being used for ASW work at that time.
