Thanks for the info. When I had a 706, I never heard a 6 meter signal
(with my poor antennas.) With my FT100, I have worked several grids, with
the same poor antennas, including mobile.
But the discussion was for a second rig, with the assumption that there
would be a separate HF-only rig. So I guess this means that the 706II or
100 would be a good buy at around $500 or so.
I understand that this is not the choice for serious 6 meter ops who need
external preamps and the like. However, I had a feeling that the
performance of the new multi band rigs was as good or better than the
less-expensive older single-banders.
