The original IC-706 had a very substandard receiver on VHF, especially
2m. No, it wouldn't be better. An IC-706II is another matter, as is an
FT-100. Both are fine on six.
Also, I have in the shack a rig with both HF and 6m, and then a separate
6m rig as well. Why? Openings on six are terribly unpredictable. I
like to monitor 6m while working HF, and that isn't convenient on a
single rig.
So... the answer to your question is maybe. It depends on your
operating habits and the rigs involved. The older rigs Chris listed
from want ads and eBay were not good buys, IMHO, but there are deals on
good 6m monoband rigs out there. For example, I know of an IC-575H for
sale. 100 watts out and a truly superb receiver. It will cost as much
or more than your choice of multiband rigs. It will also outperform
them.
