Been my thoughts, too.
But, then, you need a freakin' 12VDC 25+ Amp power supply also --
another $100+ or so.
(12VDC pwr supplies seem to price out at about $5 per amp.)
Whereas, with the IC-551's or FT-620(B)'s, and some others, it's
just "plug and play".
Now, for strictly mobile operations, the IC-706 would be a Real Good
Bet on 6M. I'm stickin' with my ol' IC-551 at home -- because I want
to "do it all" from the QTH with just the 9.5 watts it emits.
But, running mobile through the Navaho or Hopi Indian Reservations,
or the other Wide Open Spaces of The Great American West, I'm
doing 'it' for The Other Guy and I should operate with what suits
him best -- that would be higher power, I suspect.
