[50mhz] ready to get my feet wet

Hi Folks,
At the risk of getting into a "religious" debate, I would honestly
recommend the Yaseu FT-100/100D instead. I have owned both the
IC706 and played with the other 706-series radios and find them
to be lacking when compared with the FT-100-series or even the
IC-746 (which is a fine radio).
This opinion is based on the Receiver performance (first and foremost)
and then flexibility, user interface come into play.
I operate contests (VHF and HF), portable, mobile and at home with these =
radios
and many others and that's what I've been observed.

Gordon Beattie

Hello Buzz,
Welcome to the "real world" of VHF where you actually interact with=20
nature (instead of repeaters) to make contacts. I suggest looking at=20
the IC706Mark II-G. You can find these used for approximately the same=20
price. You will definitely want the 100 watts on 6m. Another option is =
to find a used IC746 - then you would have 100 watts also on 2m. GL and =
