[1000mp] Older FT-1000MP problem

Hello Tom,
Sounds like it could be the internal switching supply beginning to fail.
I had the same thing happen with my FT-1000MP about 3 years ago. It kept
getting worse over time until one day the main receiver was completely dead
and not transmit output either. The sub-receiver, however, worked fine. It
turned out to be Q-4031 over voltage protection on the Local Unit (Phased
Lock Loop Circuits) which were not getting any voltage to the oscillators
for the different bands. In some cases the problem was just at one of the
PLL oscillators causing only partial shut down of the receive/transmit
function allowing the 'MP to operate on other bands not controlled by that
particular oscillator. As the radio gets older and components start to age
and change value oscillator circuits drift and sometimes all it takes is a
"tweaking" of the vari-cap for the affected oscillator, TC-4002, for 20
meters, for example.
Now I'm not saying that this is what is going on with your 'MP but the
symptons are similiar to mine prior to it going dead. It could be caused by
the internal power supply starting to have problems and not supplying the
appropriate voltage to power up the rig. The switching power supply in my
'MP failed causing high voltages to be applied to the rig and that is what I
figure caused Q-4031 to fail and act like a fuse. Unfortunately the power
supply failure also affected other circuits in the radio and after 3 years I
am still picking away at the MP trying to get it working properly again. It
receives and transmits but the receiver has 10 db less sensitivity and the
transmitter also has issues. After the failure I ordered a complete new
Local Unit PLL board and that brought it back to life to reveal several
other issues. Unfortunately Yaesu does not support this model any more and
their spare parts bin is getting low.
One thing you can do is re-wire the MP for an external 13 volt d.c. supply
and try a known reliable external supply. You have to lower the front panel
to access the molex plug to change over from an internal supply to an
external one. If it works ok then your internal switching supply is
beginning to fail. Those Yaesu internal switching supplies cost over $400.00
if you can find one! I would rather use a regular external d.c. supply than
replace the internal one if it is bad - costs less money.
When those switching supplies go bad they really creat some weird high
voltages as I found out a long tome ago trying to trouble shoot one for a
portable vhs player - cheaper to buy a replacement supply
Hope your problem isn't as involved as mine and you can solve it easily. I
would, though, try powering the MP on an external supply for a week or so to
see if the problem persists or goes away.
Good luck & 73,

Hello!
Has anyone seen this problem?
Yesterday I turned on the MP and it decided not to come on. After several
attempts it came up and worked fine.
This morning the same thing happened but with a twist. I would turn it on
and shortly after turn it back off. When turned off there was a sound coming
from the receiver that was a "sort of" motorboating sound for just about one
second. Anyway, after maybe 30 minutes I tried again and lo and behold it
woke up. So far this morning it is still working.
Big contests coming up very soon... and ideas out there?
Thanks.
