I just repaired this same symptom on  a friends ft-1000mp, he had to press
the on button a few times 
After it warmed up to get it to come on.

Internal powersupply capacitors are leaky and weak.

?Has anyone seen this problem?
?Yesterday I turned on the MP and it decided not to come on. After several
attempts it came up and worked fine.
?This morning the same thing happened but with a twist. I would turn it on
and shortly after turn it back off. When turned off there was a sound coming
from the receiver that was a "sort of" motorboating sound for just about one
second. Anyway, after maybe 30 minutes I tried again and lo and behold it
woke up. So far this morning it is still working.
?Big contests coming up very soon... and ideas out there?
