Billy:
Now that the dust has settled, let me give my modest opinion (as a DX'er)
about the different versions of the FT-1000, plus another alternative.
Before investing in either one, the original "MP" or the "Field", take a
close look at the FT-950. I had the FT-1000MP, currently have the FT-2000,
the Field and the 950, and I am inclined for the later. The 950 is a great
rig, worth being considered. If you already own a 30-amp 12-volt power
supply, you will be investing no more than $1300, the same price you will be
paying for a Field with a couple of filters. The 950 has more advanced
technology that the Field. The selectable roofing filter (combined with
other DSP features) is not available in the Field and it's very useful. The
original MP is even older, was a solid performer and you can get one for
less than $1 K. But if you have to choose between the MP and the Field, go
for the Field. --Eventually, you will be investing in INRAD filters and a
roofing filter.-- Another suggestion: go to the ARRL equipment review
section in their web page and check all three rigs. Also, in E-Ham you will
find personal (sometimes biased) opinions about all three rigs. Finally, if
I were to buy another rig in the less-that-$1500 range, I'll put them in
this order: (1) FT-950, (2) FT-1000MP Mark V Field and (3) FT-1000MP.
My 2 cents.
Good luck es 73 de Dave, W4DN (EX-KP4AM)
