Hello Mike:
Here is how you decode the serial number:
Serial number format is YMLLUUUU where
Y is the last digit of the year,
M is the month with C = Jan, D = Feb and so on,
LL is the lot number (CPU is programmed by lot number & service bulletins
are also referenced by lot number, not date), and
UUUU is the unit number within the lot.
There is no doubt after you read the Sherwood evaluations about the
improvements in the Mark V as compared to the earlier radios.
Also notice the nice improvements brought about by the installation of the
roofing filter mod from Inrad. My impression from having
had both the Mark V and the Field on my bench here, is that the Field is a
slightly quieter receiver to begin with, and the roofing filter
will make it even quieter. The final quieting can be easily obtained by
upgrading the audio DSP with a BHI module, the details of which
are in this months QST, or can be found on my website.
I think you have made an excellent choice. I am currently comparing an FT
2000 to the Mark V, and I'm not ready to retire my radio
just yet for the latest entry.
73 and Happy DXing,
Mike
