Fred:

There is a well-documented issue with a DIP relay in the front end of
the MP and Mk. V with symptoms similar to what you describe. However, it
is not limited to SSB, and does not manifest as total audio loss.
Rather, the signal is attenuated dramatically, but not totally gone. Are
you saying your problem only appears on SSB, or do you not operate CW
and therefore are unable to widen your observation? The part about
cycling TX/RX to clear it definitely fits.

I suggest you check further to determine conclusively whether you
observe a total or partial loss of received signal, and whether it
occurs on just SSB or all modes, and also whether it is observed on one
band or all bands.

I first encountered a problem operating 160 CW from 3B9R in 1999 with my
MP that was still in warranty. That radio went to Yaesu, where the tech
claimed he could not reproduce the problem, even though I had included
detailed instructions how to do so. He replaced a bunch of parts, which
were returned to me, although with no list of reference designators. The
problem was gone but appeared again some years later. That reappearance
may or may not have been due to the same cause. I now believe the
current problem is due to an Ameritron relay box up in my array.

That said, there have been numerous complaints about this over the years
and you should be able to find them in the archives for this reflector.
To my knowledge, Yaesu has /never/ acknowledged this problem and emails
at the time to Chip, K7JA were unanswered until after Chip left Yaesu.
