Dear Frans,
Try wearing a set of earphones and activate the monitor feature, cranking up
on the
monitor volume when you speak.
My station runs two different microphones, one of which is an EV noise
cancelling
dispatch mike, 150 ohms, Z, through a 150:600 ohm xfmr into the mike plug.
The mike is not very live to begin with, and the xfmr robs some juice from
it too.
Using the monitor and earphones I was able to maximize the talk power
in terms of maximum positive and negative deflections of the stations
peak power meter, with the mike gain at 12:00 o'clock, and the processor
on, with it's control set to 9:00 o'clock.
Any more mike gain or processing results in audio distortion, with me
speaking at a low normal with my lips almost touching the mike
screen.
If the gain is too high my audio chain picks up the different fans, blowers
and
unwanted room acoustics, and if the processing is too high my audio sounds
like
a used car sales ad on a cheap transistor AM radio, and the IMD starts to
bother adjacent SSB channels.

With the PROC. on I have almost no response on the mic gain and there is
only a response up to 12 h .with the PROC knob.
Perhaps I'm hunting ghosts but I would expect that I could over modulate the
radio..by wrongly adjusting the mic gain.
