Hi Tom
I have the same weird problem here with my FT 1000MP.
I even left on for 24 hours without it actually turning on.
At another time when turned on a tone would emanate and a clicking noise
like a relay turning on and off was heard.
I have not used it for a while now and a few nights ago I turned it on, and
it came to life. Switched it off and immediately turned it on and it did
turn on.
Did that a few times and it worked.
Temperature wise it sits on a bench as it has been for the past six years
or so I have had it where the ambient temperature varies from 34 deg C down
to about 22 deg C.
One day I will open the covers and see if I can find anything. I got a
circuit diagram of the switching supply from a ham in the Ukraine.
Not sure of what I will find.
Hope you get it repaired first and tell me ( and others) about it.
I know all this does not help but only to report of a similar and maybe
widespread issue.
Regards
Frank

Therefore it is a very hot environment and when things heat up in the
afternoon the radio works...
