Hello Tom,
You have several good replies, so I don't need to re-hash them here. However
a good way to contain power line side transients ( Power Line Disturbances,
I like that description Hal, hi hi), is to use a UPS. I have my computer
equipment on one ups, and the ham gear on a separate ups. Very neat to stay
on the air with no interruptions to the system during power line
disturbances. Gives me plenty of time to think about if I need to put the
generator on line, or shut every thing down gracefully. My ups's are 1100
watt units that I also use else where around the house to protect other home
entertainment gear, especially vcr's and satellite receivers with hard
drives built in. I don't lose recordings anymore!

P.S.
To get rid of some of the weird rfi on the ham bands, unplug AC switching
supplies from the wall outlet to fully shut them down. Off switches on
equipment with switching supplies dont turn off the supply power to the
switchers. Ac switching supplies in many Tv's are very dirty rfi wise.
