The operator who runs a solid-state amplifier certainly needs it. The ALC
loop is the amplifier's first line of defence.

Correct hook-up and calibration of the ALC in this case is mandatory, and
not negotiable (at least if one values those costly RF power devices.)

As a general question, why did the engineers who designed the equipment go
to all the trouble of including ALC if it were not needed?
