As I wrote previously I have fried my MAX232 CAT interface chip in my brand new FT1000MP.
We replaced the chip last Friday and have to admit that is was not a nightmare scenario.
We gently removed the covers of the FT1000mp Mark V field, be aware that the carry handle need to be removed as well!
After removing the two covers the FT1000mp has to be turned upside down and the MAX Q5006 can be found (rear facing toward you) at the right hand site.
It is close to the 9 pin SUB D connector.
There are several ways the remove the old IC, we did it by dropping some extra solder and melted all solder at one site and gently lift the IC, did the same with the other side.
We removed the extensive solder, than placed the new MAX232, solder the whole lot.
Few things to note:
Do not try to put too much force while lifting one side of the IC.
Annoying, a whole bunch of electrolyte capacitors sitting in the way. pay some attention do not overheat them while un or soldering! I do not understand why Yaesu designs the control board in such way that a part which easily fries at such place. the is plenty space to do it more sufficient.
I think removing the old IC using hot air is not wise. due to nearby parts!
Hint. if you can find the time to do ( I 'll certainly do so in the near future ) design a little board with a DIL size MAX232 in a socket, use OPTO's in order to achieve the galvanic separation.
Remove the original MAX232 and use thin wires to connect your extension-board to the terminals of the removed MAX232. We are only speaking of six wires, ground and 5V for the MAX232, 12V needed for the OPTO' s.
There is however enough space around the control-board.
So folks this is my contribution for solving CAT problems..
TNX for the support sofar.
