Hi Cort,
The FT-1000D tuning mod upgrade is easy to perform. You remove the top and
bottom covers and tilt the front panel forward. The modification consists
of a small circuit board that mounts in the area behind the CW Tune LED.
The cable from the tuning knob encoder is unplugged from the radio and
plugged into the new board, while a new cable from the board runs to the
original connector on the radio. As I remember, the only other connection
is to get DC voltage from the radio to the board. They provide a plug-in
adapter for that, but I elected to strip back the insulation on the wires
and make a solder connection.
You need separate mod kits for the main and sub VFOs, but I elected to
modify only the main knob. After the mod, the CW Tune LED remains unlit
when slow tuning at the new 2.5 kHz rate. As the knob is turned faster, the
tuning rate changes to 10 kHz and the CW Tune window lights up red. When
the knob is spun quickly, an amber LED illuminates the window and the rate
increases to 25 kHz. The green CW Tune LED still works normally. The new
tuning speed LED merely shares the same window on the front panel.
It's a very slick modification and most of the time required is for
disassembly and reassembly of the radio. The improvement is quite
impressive.

Bill, W9NHQ
