[1000mp] beginner's problem

I have just bought a FT 1000 MKV. On cw mode on the main VFO all is quiet.
on the other modes it works fine and sub vfo B is fine. It must be a simple
problem, but I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Pse help thanks,
