David,
USB is the way the world is going these days.
You should be able to use the single serial port for the KAM, one of
the current USB "all-in-one" fax/printer/copier/modem devices for
faxing, and use one of many USB interface solutions for the rig
control. If the hardware is properly designed and constructed, USB
is no more noisy or sensitive to RF in the shack than a serial port.
With a good interface, at worst you will need a couple of toroids
(chokes) on the USB cable if you happen to be running an end-fed
wire with the tuner in the shack.
Most of the better rig control/logging programs work fine with USB
but you will need to ask questions about capability and compatibility.
Some interfaces will not support FSK, some will not do CW, etc. so be
selective.
